[CD Review] JOSH PYKE – The Beginning and the End of Everything

That loveable bearded man has done it again, adding another noble release to a repertoire of musical eminence dating back over six years. Now, Josh Pyke presents us his fourth studio album; The Beginning and The End of Everything… a pragmatic journey through the process of accepting the inevitable.

Opening with the haunting layers and nifty use of a 12-string in ‘Bug Eyed Beauty’ before launching into the aptly named title track where a theme begins to unfurl, highlighted by tracks ‘Haunt You Love’ and ‘All The Very Best of Us’ that depict the bitter-sweet contingencies of time taking its toll and portraying a ready willingness to face the unknown.

Recorded with John Castle (The Bamboos, The Drones, & Washington), The Beginning and The End of Everything maintains Pyke’s quintessential simplicity yet molds with an intricately more bounteous sound of fumbling banjo, brisk hums of harmonica, delicate jangling keys, and the brassy benefit of horn arrangements appearing throughout.

Undoubtedly, this is the most impressionable Josh Pyke I have experienced to date, a ponderous call for a self-confessed long term fan, but I can assure The Beginning and The End of Everything will be embedded into my mind, soul and eardrums for a permanently foreseeable future.
