MAMMALS kicked off on a high last year winning the Triple J unearthed slot on the Sydney leg of the Laneway Festival. Hailing from sunny Sydney shores, the band launched in 2011 and has since produced dreamy and ethereal tracks including ‘Move Slower’ and ‘Carried’. With an EP set to launch this month, Mammals frontman GUY BROWN take some time out to discuss the band’s latest film clip.

What can listeners hope to expect from your upcoming EP?
The EP is pretty diverse so hopefully there will be something on there that will resonate with a few listeners. There are intense electronic moments all the way to intimate spaces of vocals. Hopefully some good vibes.

What’s the inspiration behind the new film clip for your most current track ‘Circles’?
After work-shopping a few ideas we came up with the concept based mainly around stunning locations. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect just from hearing about them. But when we arrived at each one it was seriously a trip out. It looks incredible.

What was it like collaborating with Sydney-based director Justin McMillan?
Justin is the man. I have worked with him in the past and it’s always been so easy and cruisey. He is super talented and passionate about everything he does. Within a week of asking if he would be able to work on the clip, we were shooting and wrapped within the next. I was really blown away.

Are there any reoccurring themes you explore in your songwriting process?
Yeah totally. Most of the time when I write, I use the music as a means of getting lost somewhere else. A lot of the time, I work on finding sounds and riffs that evoke emotions that I can then build the rest of a song from.

Opening for Of Monsters and Men recently at Enmore Theatre must have been a treat. If you could open for anyone else right now who would it be?
Yeah it was such a cool experience. I reckon it would be epic to open for Alt j. Others have to be Local Natives, Radiohead or Mac Demarco; I’d love to party with that guy.

What would be the weirdest thing you’d add to your rider?
At least five to 13 pug dogs.

What are your top five guilty pleasure tracks?
The Chromatics – ‘Lovefool’
Lilly Allen – ‘The Fear’
Dingdangler – ‘Double Ended Di-L-Do’
Madonna – ‘Like A Prayer’
Samwell – ‘What What (In the Butt)’

When/where can we hope to see you play next?
Later on in the year we will be touring around Australia. We might have a gig before then but you’ll just have to keep an eye out.
