Enmore Theatre, Sydney
Wednesday April 18, 2018 :

Ocean Alley: if the world is your Oyster, where do you get it?

Country of origin: Northern Beaches, Sydney

Members: Baden, Angus, Nic, Lach, Mitch and Tommy

Support or headline: Headline

Good crowd/bad crowd: Crowd was, how do I put it… off their chops, so rowdy and loose from drinking (even if it was all ages). I also saw people smoking and vaping.

Number of times seen band: 1

Crowd participation: Everyone was singing/screaming their lung out, dancing to their hearts content, like nobody’s watching. Swaying their arms side to side up in the air. Just an amazing night all round, if you’re a band!!!!!

Genre: Psych Rock Reggae

Rating: 9/10 guitars

Review: Songs are amazing, so damn catchy. Lighting was perfect. Confetti at the end was an awesome touch (and ending) to the night. Although, you need to introduce the names of the songs even if you think everyone knows them, for the new fans.

Summary: Ocean Alley continues to solidify their place as one of Australia’s most exciting independent artists, with the release of their sophomore album Chiaroscuro. The album features singles ‘The Comedown’ and ‘Overgrown’ along with new single ‘Confidence’ which is a melting pot of pure groove. They have gone from strength to strength since the release of ‘Comedown’. How awesome is this, they sold out their 2017 tour of Australia and New Zealand. With multiple tours across the world in support of the album release this year, Ocean Alley are set to rapidly build on the incredible DIY growth of their electric music and emphatic live show. Great way to end my birthday boys, great job! Thank you for a killer performance and a phenomenal night.

The Jim Mitchells: musically, the bourbon shot you have on the porch before you head out for a BIG night

Support or headline: Support for Ocean Alley (Sydney)

Good crowd/bad crowd: At this point the night was just getting started so everyone was kind of just chillin’ back enjoying the music they were sharing with us.

Number of times seen band: 1

Crowd participation: Swaying their hips, and just having a blast.

Genre: Garage/ Alternative

Rating: 7/10 guitars

Review: Awesome songs, vocals were perfect, very catchy, need to move around more.

Summary: Think old school rock/garage meets today’s era of rock ‘n’ roll and you end up with none other than, The Jim Mitchells. The creative project of multi-talented Jim Mitchell, this Sydney-based five piece have seen an exponential growth since forming in early 2016. Since the release of their debut EP Planet Absorbed in September of 2016, the band has played a slew of headline shows both locally and interstate, including slots at reputable local festivals; Sydney Psych Fest, Vivid Live, FREEDOM and Visions Festival. Having been hand-picked to support Dope Lemon (Angus Stone) on their recent East Coast Tour, The Jim Mitchells look forth with the release of their latest single ‘Ankle Deep’. Featuring Beatle-esque vocal harmonies and a driving rhythm section, ‘Ankle Deep’ boldly develops on the foundations of their debut. Exuding the contagious energy and personality the band has quickly become known for, the new single boasts cleaner production and a developed alt-pop sensibility.

Tunes Of I: the gig was full of Kiwi’s, eh. But they were all good Bro

Country of origin: Wellington, New Zealand

Members: Conway, Jules, Makura, Luther, Kaito and Bryn

Support or headline: Support for Ocean Alley (Sydney)

Good crowd/bad crowd: going absolutely crazy, loving every damn second of their set. Crazy Kiwi’s!! Gotta love ‘em.

Number of times seen band: 1

Crowd participation: Everyone was really feelin’ the vibes from these guys. Singing all the songs they knew which was great to see.

Genre: Reggae

Rating: 8/10 guitars

Review: Great sound, stage presence was perfect, songs were very catchy. I got a reggae (obviously..) but beachy type vibe too, which was cool!

Summary: Born out of the famed New Zealand school of Music, Tunes Of I are fast developing into one of the nations most exciting local-roots acts. Featuring a solid backbone of drums, bass, vocals and guitars, and complimented by some of Wellington’s finest horns players, Tunes Of I – or TOI as they’re also known – are renowned around the country for their original, tight and refreshing live performances. FYIm in Maori, Toi means (verb) fish for eels with an eel-bob – flax loops with bait attached used for entangling the eels’ teeth. Maybe; we are the Eels that the boys are catching??
