[Live Review] SIMPLY RED

Simply Red Post

Sydney Opera House
Tuesday February 23, 2016 :

Pop-Soul legend Mick Hucknall and his band Simply Red rolled in to town on Tuesday to Sydney’s Opera House. With a little help from grunge – pop darling Natalie Imbruglia as the full moon rose across the harbour. Natalie played a strong set of hits including ‘Shiver’, ‘Wrong Impression’, ‘Smoke’ and crowd pleaser ‘Torn’ along with a taster from her current covers album, Male.

Hucknall swaggered to the stage with a mixed bag of musicians old & new, his trademark vocals still as strong today as they were back in 1985. The flame-haired singer worked the crowd in to a frenzy. The crowd were on their feet from the get go and the hits just kept coming and even album tracks from Stars and A New Flame were received with mighty roars from die hard fans.

Whether it was date night or a girls night out they went wild in the aisles. It was a barmy night on the Opera House steps and the jazz funk fused tunes Simply Red churned out were most definitely the soundtrack of many 40 something’s lives. ‘Fairground’, Something Got Me Started’, ‘Money’s Too Tight (to mention)’ and ‘Holding Back The Years’ have all stood the test of time.

Mick Hucknall and his merry men celebrated the return of Simply Red on their Big Love tour next stop The State Theatre.
