[News] THE FALLS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL LINE-UP GROWS

Asgier - Falls

The Falls Music & Arts Festival’s line-up is reaching dizzying heights with extra delights. As excitement builds for general ticket sales just around the corner, the fest has gone and dropped another batch of 24-karat artists playing across Lorne, Marion Bay and Byron this summer!

Last weeks’ Ballot sales were met with unprecedented demand and have concluded with Lorne tickets selling out in record time! The festival has set aside allocations of all ticket types for sales commencing tomorrow, which will kick off at 9am AEST.

Joining the top-drawer 2014 line-up will be…

Since hitting Australian airwaves Ásgeir’s debut album In The Silence has scored triple j album of the week and the chilling single ‘King and Cross’ is set to be one of the big hits of 2014. In The Silence became Iceland’s fastest and biggest selling debut album ever by a home grown artist, outselling the debuts of superstars Bjork and Sigur Ros combined with a staggering one in ten Icelanders now owning a copy. Hailed ‘the next big thing’ this Icelandic artist is sure to stun audiences at Falls 2014!

Country soul, rock’n’roller Dan Sultan is always best experienced live. With a new album this year Blackbird receiving critical acclaim he’s a man in high demand. Recorded with Grammy Award-winning producer Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Tom Waits) in the legendary Blackbird Studio, which inspired the album title. He’s currently touring the country with his new material and is leaving audiences breathless.

The Lorne and Byron events run for an additional day so they have a few more artists gracing their respective stages. The following acts will play across both venues…

Cloud Control, the four Blue Mountains musos intent on reviving the dulcet tones of vintage pop, best demonstrated with their 2013 hit release Dream Cave. A festival ready band, their entire performance always has a celebratory feel, especially when they belt out favourites like ‘There’s Nothing In The Water’, ‘Death Cloud’, Dojo Rising’ and ‘Promises’.

The beautiful and talented Megan Washington will let loose a jam-packed set with hits ‘How To Tame Lions’, ‘Rich Kids’ and ‘Clementine’ as well as tracks from her new album There There, due out this September.  We can expect an emotional, uplifting and an all-round honest performance from the lady who wears her heart on her sleeve. An Aussie treasure.

Melbourne’s Kingswood are quickly gaining a reputation as one of Australia’s hottest homegrown acts. Since their formation a few years ago, the indie-rock four-piece have toured with heavyweights like Aerosmith and Grinspoon in addition to numerous festival appearances including Splendour In The Grass. With their debut album Microscopic Wars dropping this month, they’ll have a fresh batch of tunes ready for you at Falls.

Brisbane 5-piece The Art Of Sleeping are currently winning hearts and minds across the country with their indie/folk sound. Many flawless singles like ‘Colourblind’ and ‘Empty Hands’ and a small collective of EPs later, the quintet have just finished recording their latest, long-awaited offering, hopefully finished in time for you at Falls!

Deep, beat driven ocean-scapes that take you far away while keeping your feet firmly tapping something catchy, that is Fishing. Slowly cementing themselves as one of the countries most prominent electronic acts, with their brand of bouncy, melodious tunes, mixtapes, as well as remixing tracks by Flume, Cloud Control and more, all which received high acclaim. Their debut album Shy Glow was released earlier this year and has established them as serious contenders.

They are the best of time, always. Hailing from Melbourne, Northeast Party House started life playing warehouse parties and local venues. They quickly gained momentum and a reputation for a high energy, dance inducing live show, which has translated to their debut album Any Given Weekend perfectly. The record is an ode to partying – the good, the bad and the ugly and is already gaining massive traction across Australian airwaves.

After casting a spell on all with her debut EP Rosie, Thelma Plum has put down her guitar and taken a step in a brave new musical direction. With DEADLY, NIMA and triple j Unearthed wins under her belt, she’s now working with hip-hop producer M-Phazes (of Kimbra and Eminem fame) and is striking a chord with audiences who love her new modern percussions and hit single ‘How Much Does Your Love Cost?’.

Playing at Lorne only…

Charlotte OC’s track ‘Colour My Heart’ is an intoxicating mix of emotional lyrics and heady, thick vocals. The 23 year old, Blackburn born singer has spread her wings over to LA and recorded and produced a supernatural title track and video, which powers on with the likes of Adele or Florence and the Machine. This is a lady on the rise and is one of very few modern Australian artists who could give some of the soulful Mo-town greats a run for their money.

Get up to get down, joining the Boogie Nights line-up (Dec 28 in Lorne, Dec 29 in Marion Bay and Dec 31 in Byron) will be…

DJ Woody presents ‘Hip Hop is 40’ AV show is an ode to music and culture that changed his and so many others’ lives over the past four decades. Hip-hop is 40 chronicles and celebrates all things hip-hop, starting with the original breaks, the first rap records – through to the party rockers spanning the 80’s up until now (all with the visuals to match!).

Californian producer DJ Fletch is heavy on the bass when remixing the likes of Jay Z, Lil Wayne and Eric Clapton – keeping the party alive well into dark.

Twerk (v.) – form of dance through engaging ones rear end in an up and down motion. If you’re still a little confused, consult the most accessible booty banging video clip you can find and educate yourself. Little did you know, those luscious ladies possess an acquired skill learnt from hours of blood sweat and tears on the dance-floor. Lucky for you, Melbourne’s very own Twerkshop are here to teach you this life long skill in an hour of jammed packed fun. By the end of class you would have rid yourself of 600 calories, the worlds problems and your once weekly gym sesh.

Bringing the lols to the Falls Comedy stages…

Described as “a younger Billy Connolly”, Queensland native Harley Breen’s latest show has the relatively audacious title of The Secret To Being Awesome. Viewers and fans will know that this is a bit of a red herring though, as Breen uses the show to take us through his unfortunate personal circumstances and background as an awkward teen and a self described “loser for Jesus”. The show has been a massive success and has built on earlier hype, which saw Breen crowned Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as Spleen Comic of the Year in 2010.

One of the Australian comedy scene’s most exciting up and comers, Tommy Dassalo has been working his proverbials off since placing as runner up in triple j’s Raw Comedy all the way back in 2005. Since then he has emerged as one of the most unique voices operating today, both as a writer and a performer. As far as the latter goes, he has appeared in The Librarians and Sleuth 101 and also hosts a weekly podcast called The Little Dum Dum Club, which regularly tops the charts. As a writer, he has worked on Talking ‘Bout Your Generation and TV Burp – proving himself to be a true all rounder.

Comedians like Jerry Seinfeld and Woody Allen have been exploring anxiety as a comedic concept for years, but Melbourne up and comer Luke McGregor takes it to another level. His latest show, I Worry That I Worry Too Much, riffs on his obsessive-compulsive behaviour, his failed attempts to hook up on Tinder and filters it all through his quirky personality. The show has been a massive success, selling out several runs and opening doors for Luke to flex his acting chops on recent comedies The Time Of Our Lives and Utopia (a role he won after being earmarked by legendary writing group Working Dog).

You’ll recognise her bright face and bubbly demeanour from Australian shows like ‘Spicks and Specks’ and ‘Dirty Laundry Live’, but it’s in her adopted home of New Zealand that comedienne Urzila Carlson’s star really shines. A big star in the land of the long white cloud, where she has sold out five solo seasons at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, Carlson has set her sights on Australia, where she showcased The Long Flight To Freedom; a show in which she chronicles her unsuccessful attempts to convince several African nations for three decades that she is African royalty.

Touching on the brutally honest side of comedy, Daniel Townes’ recent show The Other Side detailed the fact that between the ages of 18 and 31, the comic spent $135,000 on marijuana. He had what he calls an ‘on the hour, every hour’ addiction. However, instead of leaning on obvious stoner comedy cliques, Townes explores the slightly darker, black comedy side of this style of life as he ruminates on addiction, OCD and unwanted pregnancies. You know, all the funny stuff. Now three years sober, Townes is gaining momentum as one of Australia’s most hilariously forthright performers.

Widely regarded as one of the top rising stars of Australian comedy Damien Power has sold out shows around Australia. And we’re not the only ones who think so – hot off the back of his 2013 sell out Comedy Festival season Damien was chosen by Jack Black to support Tenacious D on their Australian tour!
