The grand tradition of British rock in the Concert Hall continues this summer when The Jam frontman, The Style Council co-founder and esteemed solo artist Paul Weller makes his Sydney Opera House debut and only Australian appearances in January for two shows in-the-round.

Celebrating a 40-year recording career, Weller will blaze the stage performing a stylistically rich and diverse set drawn from his 13th solo album, A Kind Revolution, together with his legendary back catalogue. One finger on the pulse of global uncertainties, A Kind Revolution is, according to The Guardian, “robustly written and emotionally satisfying,” and features collaborations with Robert Wyatt and Boy George.

He may have started out as the quintessential angry young man, but he’s become a textbook study in growing old gracefully,” NME said of Weller’s career, which the man himself has said is “not about looking back… it’s about leaving a legacy … there’s always so much more to do, to create and to leave behind”.

There aren’t a lot of creative fields the ‘Modfather’ – a term he earned fronting The Jam – hasn’t dipped into. As a fashion designer, his label Real Stars are Rare inspired a generation of trendsetters and young mods. He was a composer for the film Jawbone, and plays a Viking in the BBC’s TV series Sherlock. The rock pin-up has received the marvellously titled ‘Godlike Genius’ NME Award and Brit Awards for this contribution to music, together with an Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award.

It’s not often I get to program someone who’s changed my dress sense and been an influence since I was a teenager but Paul Weller is it,” said Ben Marshall, Head of Contemporary Music at Sydney Opera House. “I discovered The Jam along with The Clash and The Specials in my late teens’ discovery of punk/post-punk music and that band hit me hard. An older friend who’d been a scooter boy in the UK introduced me to Northern Soul, The Style Council & Weller’s then-new solo album Wild Wood and I was convertedThrough his bands and his restless 25 years – and counting – solo career, Paul Weller’s impact on modern music is undisputed. It’s a genuine honour to welcome him to the Concert Hall for his Sydney Opera House debut performing his only two Australian shows.

Opera House alumni include fellow Brit rockers-down-the-ages Morrissey, New Order and The Stone Roses, all of whom kept fans on their feet in the Concert Hall. Now, Paul Weller will provide the perfect encore.
