Ivy League is proud to release singer-songwriter STEVE SMYTH’S stunning album, Exits, today! Having debuted this morning in the top 40 of iTunes’ Album Chart, Exits is Steve’s Ivy League Records debut record.
With the Sydney Morning Herald likening Steve Smyth to Royal Blood and Benjamin Booker, who as a trio are responsible for some of the most exciting and refreshing rock records right now “there’s more at play here than rasp and rock, there’s country gentleness to be found underneath, too”. Exits has already made its mark on critics and fans alike, receiving the Feature Album slot at Double J with the station gushing “There’s no doubting he is one of the most talented singers we have right now”, as well as Album Of The Week status from ABC Newcastle and Darwin, a 4/5 review in The Music and Rolling Stone calling Smyth “an undeniable talent”.
Steve has already set out on his mammoth 50-date national Exits Tour, selling out his Darwin Festival show weeks ahead of album release. Tonight Steve and band celebrate Exits by, quite fittingly, playing Brisbane’s The Bearded Lady and stay in town to play Bigsound next week. Steve will be touring Exits right through until December so there’s plenty of opportunity to catch this inherent wanderer in a venue closer to home.
Exits was recorded in Echo Park, in the shadow of the Hollywood Hills drawing upon the services of Joey Waronker on drums (Atoms For Peace, Thom Yorke, Beck) and Gus Seyffert on Bass (The Black Keys, Norah Jones). Timelessness is a difficult quality to pin down, but Steve Smyth has it in spades. Hailing from the New South Wales south coast, Smyth’s hazy, itinerant life continuingly sees him travel across North America, Europe and through Asia. Never pausing long enough to take root, all the time registering experiences in his songs.
