[CD Review] JOHN BUTLER TRIO – Flesh & Blood

1000_FleshBlood-2

The first words that come to mind upon listening through this album are beautiful, stunning and utterly captivating. There is a distinctive theme throughout this album of love, lost love, companionship and the emotional rollercoaster we go on with friends and partners.

The stories within the lyrics gain their strength through the depth in which they run and how relatable they are. Throughout the album, the variety in tracks were earthy and rhythmic and made me want to dance. Each song really had its own identity, and were very fresh compared to the development of tracks on past albums.

‘Spring To Come’ struck me instantly with the beautiful sound of the acoustic guitar, and it was easy to get a vivid image of him actually playing his guitar before me. The lyrics within this song were relatable to a multitude of people, particularly when circumstances are hard “Out of the darkness only light can come, after a lonely long night comes the sun” particularly stood out.

The drums beat and use of electric guitar within ‘Livin’ In The City’ and ‘Devil Woman’ had a great groove. ‘Young and Wild’ was pleasingly stripped back and the use of female vocals gave a stunning charm to the whole song. Within ‘Wings Are Wide’ the guitar reminded me of the sound of rain falling on a tin roof, and features very vivid lyrics – “Too long I’ve waited, my colour has now faded… So let me flow, like melting snow… Through stormin’ seas and broken masts”.

Overall it is a strong new album showcasing the diversity of this well loved band and it is worth your time to listen it through.
