[CD Review] SKYEPOINT – Likes Of You

Skyepoint

The merging of indie rock with melodic pop has given Skyepoint the unique individuality that we often find coming out of Newcastle. There is a versatile sound that will be attractive to audiences of all ages. The vocals of Liz Gritten in the first moments of title track ‘Likes of You’ had my attention as they are strong and made me want to keep listening. Immediately, I looked forward to how it would develop as each track unfolded.

The lyrics of the title track are strong and catchy. As I listened, the imagery came to life in my mind and this gives the song itself a great strength. The guitar licks of Tim Hickey make for enjoyable listening. I found myself waiting to see what he would do next.

Unfortunately elements of the production have let Gritten down vocally in moments of ‘Take the Fall’. At these times, however, the music behind her captivates my attention and works well. The shortcomings of the production are also evident in the mixing of the tracks, where they seem to be out of balance, with the vocals sounding quite loud over the backing music rather than being more level and equal. With more work on the production of these recordings, I believe there is more to be found within this band.

‘Scarlet’ and ‘Tokyo’ grabbed my attention and are very upbeat but I couldn’t connect to the songs themselves to fully enjoy them. ‘Avalanche’ can be listened to multiple times, the vocals are strong, the harmonies sound great, and now it is stuck in my mind. I am very eager to see this band in a live setting and see how the two correlate to each other between live and recording. I also believe being in a live setting with the energy of the crowd will only make me enjoy their sounds more.
