[CD Review] THE LITTLE STEVIES – Most Requested: Live 2009-2012

The bouncing bass, syncopated strumming and sweet vocals of sisters’ Sibylla Stephen and Bethany Stephen and band mate Robin Geradts-Gill result in a pleasant and captivating opening track ‘Feel It’, on The Little Stevies‘ third album. A mixture of live recordings, Most Requested: Live 2009-2012 captures the energy and ambience of a Stevies live show.

Reminiscent of The Waifs earlier sounds, there is a lot of similarities in the two folk bands. With honest storytelling, Australian accents, folk sounds and of course the two singing strumming sisters accompanied with a male. But lack the fire and maybe some luck for mainstream success.

After a lovely opening and live chatter between tracks the Stevies do a mellow and plucky take on Temper Trap’s ‘Sweet Disposition’. The Stevies head back in the acoustic folk pop direction for ‘Sunshower’, showcasing their three-part harmonies.

The three-part harmonies work for the most part, but sometimes are slightly off-pitch and over done, drowning out some of the backing music. When a lead vocal is taken, typically by one of the Stephen sisters, the words sound better. The Stevies would benefit from splitting the vocal work more often. Geradts-Gill goes solo on the odd song. His voice is ok, but it does not sparkle.

The Stevies songs are textured with soft percussion brushes, ukuleles, acoustic and smooth electric guitars, sprinkled with harmonica and of course vocals. The inviting sounds of one of Australia’s folk outfits provide a pleasant listen and warm smiles upon listening. It is at risk of putting you to sleep, but in the nicest possible way. Sweet dreams.
