[Live Review] MIDDLE KIDS (Sydney)

Oxford Art Factory, Sydney
Sunday February 11, 2018 :

Having spent the tail end of 2017 and the first chunk of 2018 touring with the big gun likes of Paul Kelly, Ryan Adams and The War On Drugs, Middle Kids decided it was time for a little Sunday night pre-celebration of their forthcoming debut album, Lost Friends locked in for release May 4th.

Kicking off the party with Clews – the Sydney based, all black everything, matching haircut, sibling duo; between Grace & Lily Richardson. Edgy & harmony-driven, Clews delivered a lusty set casting the light & shade of the grittier side of the folk realm… a big sound, commanding attention from the get go.

With the drawing of a curtain, Sydney trio Middle Kids appeared in an electric glow and wasted no time giving the crowd a taste of what to expect from the new album… powerful vocals, and catchy choruses; highlighting their forte for conjuring moments both intimate and epic all at once.

There is just something soulfully suburban about this band and the way they deliver themselves on stage; with poignant words, infectious melodies and sweeping moments of high energy thrashy goodness. What is increasingly apparent is how they’d be both comfortable and capable of rocking a large scale stadium show just as much as playing a mate’s backyard on the weekend.

When it came to their latest single ‘Mistake’, there was absolutely no mistaking just how ready their fans are to have that album at their fingertips. As a sold out Oxford Art Factory sung along and soaked in the vivid reminder of exactly why Middle Kids are one of the most exciting bands coming out of Australia and taking on the world right about now.
