[Live Review] NECK DEEP (Perth)

The Capital, Perth
November 29, 2018 :

Perth saw one of the finest pop-punk acts to come out of the UK on Thursday night, Neck Deep put on one hell of a show with support from two incredible, female-fronted Australian bands who tore the roof off of the venue!

Stateside kicked off the show, hailing from Brisbane these alt-rockers filled the room with so much energy, the lead singer Erin Reus, was practically hovering in the air from all the jumping! Her vocals were so clean and controlled that her range seemed completely effortless whilst her bandmate and bass player, Jackson Lehane poured some grit into the songs with his heavy backing vocals.

Stand Atlantic was up next and boy did they come out strong, opening with their ever so popular song ‘Lavender Bones’ and getting the whole crowd moshing throughout their set. Sydney’s alt/pop-rockers had everyone’s eyes peeled to the stage as it was impossible to not watch when their bassist, David Potter was spinning the guitar around his body and catching it just in time to play the next section of the song!

As the crew took all the backline from the support acts including the drum kit provided by local band, Those Who Dream off stage, the crowd’s excitement continued to grow before the lights went off and Neck Deep’s intro began to play. The band walked on stage and huge cheers rang out as they started to play their first song. Lead singer Ben Barlow shouting “HOW’RE WE DOING PERTH?” and judging by the crowd’s reaction I’d say we were all having a bloody fantastic time!

Neck Deep took the audience on an absolute emotional rollercoaster throughout their show, playing through all their new and old hits, starting off with their more ‘boppy’ tunes like ‘Happy Judgement Day’ before diving deep and pulling on everyone’s heartstrings with songs like ‘December’ with Ben stating “This is for anyone who’s ever been f**ked over by someone” then they played the one song Ben always thought he wouldn’t be able to play. Explaining to the crowd just how emotional the song was for him as ’19 Seventy Sumthin’ was about his parents. The beautiful words from Ben had many fans in tears before the song even started but they were still singing along to the beautiful tribute to Ben’s Dad.

The tears didn’t stop there as the band played the song that their album The Peace & The Panic was built around, ‘In Bloom’ had everyone from the very front to the very back singing and it led into their three songs long encore. Not to mention giving in to do a ‘shoey’ with the least smelly shoe that had been thrown on stage by members of the crowd. The high energy but even more so, highly emotional concert was brought to an end with their hit song ‘Where do we go when we go’.

I was so impressed by all three bands that played and as this was my third time seeing Neck Deep I knew they wouldn’t disappoint! Neck Deep is certainly one of those rare bands that have all the key elements to make a live show more of an experience rather than ‘just another gig’, from the line outside the venue, throughout the show and after, you’re left with a feeling that you were a part of something f**king awesome! Overall it was a bloody brilliant show and one that you certainly wouldn’t want to miss! I would definitely recommend seeing Neck Deep and their supporting bands, Stateside and Stand Atlantic on tour!!
