Less than a month after unleashing their debut EP Manouevres, relentless Melbourne upstarts Osaka are back – this time with a dark, foreboding video for their recent single ‘Weights’, along with an east coast tour announcement.

Directed by filmmaker Hailey Hugh-Clink, the clip is as unsettling as it is strangely stunning. Shot over two days in a mysterious location, it builds a brooding, gloomy world from which Osaka can authentically tell their story. The clip detaches itself from reality via elements of interpretive dance, manipulation of the physical world, and a grime-esque aesthetic. A sense of mythos pervades the clip, allowing viewers to glimpse more fantastical angle of ‘Weights’. Frontman Edvard Hakansson says of the track: “It talks about carrying someone or something’s weight… And what would happen if you just allowed the weight to crush you? Or if you gave up on why you carried it.

Osaka are climbing the ranks at break-neck speed. Manouevres (prod. Malcolm Besley – City Calm Down, Snakadaktal & The Creases) is the bright, considered debut of a band who are enamoured with the golden age of indie rock, but have the chops to rejuvenate the genre for a new age. In more ways than one, Osaka are a band still in their relative infancy. But with tastemaking outlets such as Indietronica, Rolling Stone Australia and FasterLouder already cheering them on, and a spate of anticipated live shows now announced, these incorrigible overachievers are poised for great heights.
