Overnight, UK four-piece Ride shared a new song. ‘Repetition’ is the second single from their upcoming album, This Is Not A Safe Place, and argues for the synonymity between change and routine. The track arrives on the heels of lead album single ‘Future Love’, which came with an accompanying Jacob Hopewell-directed video.
Speaking on ‘Repetition,’ singer Andy Bell says:
“I haven’t got tired yet of blasting this track. ‘Repetition’ is at the absolute heart of ‘This Is Not A Safe Place.’ It was one of the very first songs written for the album, and has always felt to me like one of the best songs I’ve written. It has a great dual harmony vocal from myself and Mark. Steve came up with the brilliant Juno 6 bassline that starts the song, which he overdubbed on our last day of recording for the album, Loz puts down a monster of a drum track, it’s both very experimental and very pop in approach and that’s what Ride always tried to do in the early days. For me it succeeds in bringing me back to all of the things we were into and talked about when we were 18, but also being of the moment, in 2019. I know I am speaking for the whole band, and Erol, when I say we are really proud of this record, and we hope you enjoy it.”
‘Repetition’ also arrives ahead of Ride’s upcoming Australian tour, which will see the band return down under for the first time in 25 years. Beginning August 31 in Perth, the band will play four dates across the country with stops in Brisbane and Melbourne before concluding September 6 in Sydney.
This Is Not A Safe Place, due August 16th via Wichita Recordings, is produced by 2017’s Weather Diaries collaborator Erol Alkan and is the fourth of the band’s albums mixed by Alan Moulder. Coming together at the end of 2018 and start of 2019, they gathered influences from the Jean Michel Basquiat exhibition at London’s Barbican Centre and the post punk sound of The Fall and Sonic Youth, for an album rich in their trademark shoegaze atmosphere, whilst simultaneously sounding rejuvenated and creatively ambitious.
