The Sea Gypsies are back before 2019 is out, primed and ready for a shining new decade with a brand new single in ‘Mexico’. Inspired by a trip to the place synonymous with hedonism, vibrancy and adventure, the single proves a great return from the group. Along with the announcement of exciting new music, the rock group reveal summer tour dates for 2020.

For frontman Luke Marlin, antics in Mexico left him severely ill – an experience that has eventually led to becoming the foundation for another catchy Sea Gypsies effort. Diagnosed with Dengue Fever after suffering symptoms that would be getting anyone freaked out on a trip away, Marlin returned to Australia where he was able to recover and take stock of a wild trip away. As the band says, “Some people say that a holiday changes an individual. After experiencing Mexico, Luke would agree.”

Recorded at The Grove Studios in Somersby, New South Wales, The Sea Gypsies created the new single alongside Scott Horscroft (Empire of the Sun, Silverchair) and Jack Nigro (DZ Deathrays, The Delta Riggs) – two champions of the game. Mastered by Darren Ziesing (RUFUS DU SOL, Tina Arena), ‘Mexico’ has all the hallmarks of an Australian release with longevity behind it. The band’s confidence shines, while their musicality has never been stronger than on this, the first taste of a whole chapter of new material still to come.

Injecting the song with humour, the band approached the music video for ‘Mexico’ with tongue firmly in cheek. Working with director Mitchell Gates (Lumin Gates Visuals), The Sea Gypsies showed off their fun side in making the visuals. “These guys are my friends; we go surfing together, rip on each other and order Dominos every band practice. We’re musicians, not actors, so we thought to ourselves, ‘Why not just have a laugh and shoot a video that we’d enjoy making?” Jackson Burke, The Sea Gypsies

The Sea Gypsies have been favourites on the Australian indie scene for some time now. Following on from the release of their debut album Movements, the band has formed a reputation on an engaging live act, as well as songwriting that is equal parts emotive and charming. Selling out shows along the east coast including dates at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory and Melbourne’s Gasometer, The Sea Gypsies’ reach has expanded greatly over the last year, particularly online where they’ve racked up 50k listeners last year off the back of the release of Movements.

With summer Australian tour dates kicking off on the east coast in December, The Sea Gypsies are ready to get 2020 started the only way they know how: dishing up shows to remember.
