[Live Review] GANG OF YOUTHS (Sydney)

Enmore Theatre, Sydney
November 26 + 29, 2018 :

In the days leading up to this year’s ARIA Awards, the band who took home 4 accolades last year, Gang of Youths set about playing six shows in a fortnight at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre. The dates spanned from 21 November to 30 November and filled out a tiny amount of the more than 20 shows the band was playing on this tour over 30 days.

I hopped along to the third show (which was truly the second as the first was postponed due to a chest infection) and it was amazing. The show was intensely emotional, with lead David Le’aupepe putting his heart and soul into a set played a mere four blocks away from where he grew up. Belting out the fan favourite singles including ‘What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?’ And ‘Magnolia’ seemed effortless to the five piece with Le’aupepe gracefully sliding into an emotional solo piano ballad in between.

Continuing the passion, Le’aupepe dedicated ‘The Heart Is A Muscle’ to his recently deceased father, before closing the night with the triumphant ‘Say Yes To Life’ while dousing the audience with sprays of white confetti.

Simply put, Gang of Youths hits all the right notes. From upbeat tracks that get you moving, to solo ballads that move you, there is nothing that this band cannot do.
