[Live Review] SARAH BLASKO (Sydney)

Metro Theatre, Sydney
Friday June 1, 2018 :

Sarah Blasko played to a packed house at The Metro Theatre last week in support of her sixth studio album, Depth of Field. Blasko took to the stage asking for the audience to “sit back, stand up” and indulge her for playing her latest experimental body of work in it’s entirety.

Opening track ‘Phantom’ set the bar with it’s pulsating synths and dreamy undertones as we entered into the world of Sarah Blasko once again. Her delivery even more theatrical than previous performances had the crowd engaged from the get go. With her powerful layered vocals pumping out of the dark and moody lit stage, Blasko’s body contortions and facial expressions brought her tales to the live stage. The use of microphones was refreshing allowing her to deliver the gorgeous lush tones of her trademark vocals.

Highlights were ‘Never Let Me Go’, ‘Heaven Sent’, ‘Making It Up’ and ‘Another’. Emotionally raw ‘Read My Mind’ is sublime and saw Blasko bearing her soul live on stage. Playing a new album in it’s entirely can be a risk but not for one of Australias strongest live performers, these tracks are classic Blasko.

A set of “old ones” followed with fan favourites ‘I am Ready’, ‘I Wanna be your Man’, ‘I Awake’, ‘God Fearing’ and ‘All I Want’. Blaskos “strict encore policy” is that she likes to be “upfront” and let her audience know what they’re in for. We were not disappointed. ‘We Won’t Run’ and ‘Without Love’ concluded the evening and left us wishing it wouldn’t end.
