Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle
Friday March 22, 2013 :

Friday night at the Cambridge was the venue for SonicAnimation‘s “Once More From The Bottom” tour.

Support act Tokyo! Denmark! Sweden!, a Sydney three piece band lead by the enticing Amy Pes played out a set warning up an ever increasing crowd. The highlight for me was the new single ‘Lights Off’ which continues to get airplay on triple J. This band certainly deserves a look if you get the opportunity.

SonicAnimation hit the stage with fury. Front man Rupert Keiller promptly adopting the area as his own moving synergistically with co member Sexton Blake. The energetic first taste of songs culminating with the popular ‘I’m a DJ’, an obvious crowd favorite. The show was an eclectic journey with songs from all six albums covered. Missing drummer Adrian Cartwright who was replaced by Morgan Evans (not from country music fame) who fitted in perfectly.

Halfway through the set saw the appearance of two furry suits better known to fans as Robert Roley and Theophilus Thistler. These unique creatures filled the stage whilst Keiller took the audience on a flying retro journey with songs including ‘Not a Love Poem’ and ‘Get Up’, ‘I Will be Twisted’, and of course ‘Theophilus Thistler’. Overall this three piece band clearly demonstrated that no matter if they are playing the Big Day Out or a small venue like the Cambridge, they are in it for the fans. A really enjoyable night.
